This design-build project creates a world class national military medical center by consolidating services from the Walter Reed Army Medical Center and the National Naval Medical Center into one medical center location in Bethesda, Maryland. The joint operational medical facility will support and promote the delivery of outstanding healthcare and treatment services to military personnel and their families in a safe, functional and sustainable environment. The exterior design preserves and enhances the architectural character of the landmark structure. project consists of a 6-story 514,000-square-foot cancer treatment center with outpatient clinics and radiation therapy; a 4-story, 167,000-square-foot addition with a new emergency department and expansion of imaging/nuclear medicine services, cardiovascular/invasive procedures and 50 critical care units; and a 45,000-square-foot, 8-level patient parking garage for with space for 943 cars. Renovations to existing facilities include 260,000 square feet for the expansion of laboratory services, surgery, neurosciences, endoscopy, imaging, musculoskeletal, 66 inpatient beds and children’s health services.
